Cromhout House

The museum is housed in two historic buildings built by the renowned architect Philips Vingboons for the Amsterdam merchant Jacob Cromhout in 1662. A crooked log on the gable stone at the front of the house is a reference to the literal meaning of Cromhout’s surname: “bent wood”. The family was very powerfull in Amsterdam during a long time.

You can also admire two of the best-preserved antique kitchens in the Netherlands, magnificent plasterwork ceilings by Ignatius van Logteren, an elegant staircase in the English style and the 18th century ceilings by Jacob de Wit with mythological scenes and the masterpiece: ‘Apollo and the Four Seasons’. The beautiful garden has ‘biblical’ trees, plants and pools.

Archaeological discoveries, artifacts from ancient Egypt, centuries-old models of the temple of Solomon and Herod, a famous 19th-century model of the Tabernacle, a model of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem explaining the significance of this sacred place in Judaism, Christianity and Islam, clay tablets, fragments of papyrus and archaeological remains tell the fascinating story of how the Bible came into existence, and the influence it has had on Dutch society through the ages.

The tour includes the collection, the house and the garden.
