Architect Cuypers designed the special national museum building since 1885, in a mixture of Gothic and renaissance. It was a ceremonial gateway to the newly expanded city. Richly decorated vaults are adorned with allegorical figures and heroes, rising from the earth to the heavens through the different planes of being, each level being richly illustrated by mosaic work, architectural sculpture, painting, and of course the stained glass itself.

From 2013 during ten years the Spanish architects Cruz and Ortiz transformed the building into a bright and spacious 21st century museum, with a.o  a new impressive entrance area, museum shop, dining area and Asiatic pavillion.
