Golden Age: religion, music & painting
A program where you will be immersed in the atmosphere of Rembrandt’s 17th century Amsterdam!
We will meet at a private house of the 17th century Amsterdam merchant Jan Hartman. This extraordinary canal side house has period rooms, a typically Dutch Renaissance Sael or hall, an authentic kitchen and box beds. In the attic is one of the Netherlands’ best-preserved secret churches. This visit can include a concert to be performed on the secret church’s unique organ that will consist of music from the 17th century, which Rembrandt may well have heard. Guided tour of the museum.
The guide will then walk with you to the Nieuwmarkt, which is located nearby. Arrival at the medieval Waag or weighing-house. We will visit the Theatrum Anatomicum where Rembrandt painted ‘The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp’. For Rembrandt, the Waag was one of the ‘old’ buildings that he particularly loved during an era of major urban renewal. Lunch at an attractive location.
Departure by boat through the canals to the Rijksmuseum. During this journey, your art historian guide will describe the culture and architectural history of the 17th century. You will disembark at the Rijksmuseum. A tour with an additional guide of both the Rijksmuseum and the ‘Highlights of the 17th Century’ exhibition in the Philips Wing. This tour will focus on the paintings of Rembrandt and his contemporaries.
Prices depending on your wishes and the number of participants.
