Jewish Amsterdam – walk
At the end of the 16th Century the first Spanish and Portuguese Jews settle in the economically fast-developing city of Amsterdam, escaping the Spanish inquisition. Together with large groups of poor Ashkenazi Jews they developed from the early 17th Century onwards an independent Jewish community that would grow into the most important Jewish community of the Jewish Diaspora. The Jewish community has left its mark on the city in many different ways. The legacy of many famous Jewish citizens of Amsterdam can still be seen.
A walking tour through the ‘Plantage’ and ‘Nieuwmarkt’ districts, taking in the Jewish Theatre, the ‘Plancius’ building, Waterloo square, the building of the Union of Diamond Cutters built by the famous architect Berlage, de ‘Pinto’ house, the ‘Nieuwmarkt’, a house for girl orphans, a hospital, and an apothecary.
Starting point: Nieuwmarkt or other location
