Museum Willet Holthuijsen
In 1739 the outside of this canal house was redesigned to look as it does today, in the highly fashionable Louis XIV style. Its last residents were Abraham Willet (1825-1888) and his wife Louisa Holthuysen (1824-1895). Louisa left a will leaving this 17th-century canal house to the city of Amsterdam, on condition the house became a museum, together with all that stood in it, including the sizeable art collection made by her late husband, Abraham Willet. The house has been turned into a beautiful museum that keeps alive the name of her family.
Nowadays the house gives an interesting impression of how the wealthy family Willet lived in the 19th century, showing the large collection of silverware, plate, and books from the Dutch Golden Age and a substantial collection of art.
The house has a magnificent ballroom, a dining room and a room looking out over the beautiful French formal garden, a romantic bedroom. The blue room has several decorative paintings by Jacob de Wit.
The tour includes the house and the garden.
